Chemotherapy is a critical treatment for cancer that involves the use of powerful drugs to eliminate cancer cells. However, chemotherapy can induce a range of side effects, including nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and increased susceptibility to infections (Bello et al., 2024). These side effects can significantly reduce the quality of life for cancer patients and may even affect their ability to continue treatment (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024). Nurses are at the forefront of patient care during chemotherapy and play a pivotal role in managing these side effects through patient education, symptom management, and coordination of care with other healthcare professionals (Adepoju et al., 2024).
In Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, chemotherapy services are available, but there is limited research on how nurses are involved in managing chemotherapy side effects and improving patient outcomes (Muhammad & Yusuf, 2024). While many patients are aware of the potential side effects of chemotherapy, they may not always receive adequate support or guidance from healthcare providers in managing these symptoms (Oladele & Yusuf, 2024). Nurses, as primary caregivers, are uniquely positioned to provide continuous monitoring and early interventions to alleviate these side effects, yet challenges such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and high patient volumes may limit their ability to perform this role effectively (Bello & Musa, 2024).
This study aims to evaluate the role of nurses in managing chemotherapy side effects in Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, and identify the strategies they use to mitigate side effects for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy side effects are a significant concern for cancer patients, and managing these side effects is critical for improving patients' quality of life and treatment adherence (WHO, 2024). In Katsina State, despite the availability of chemotherapy services, many patients experience debilitating side effects that hinder their treatment process (Ibrahim et al., 2024). Nurses, as central members of the healthcare team, have a unique role in addressing these issues, yet there is limited research into how effectively they manage chemotherapy side effects in this region. This study seeks to evaluate the strategies nurses employ and explore the challenges they face in managing chemotherapy-related side effects in Katsina State's Federal Medical Centre.
The study will focus on nurses working in the oncology department at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State. Limitations include the possible bias in self-reported data from nurses and variability in chemotherapy protocols across different hospitals.
